Thesis Introduction
When I chose this theme I thought that I would like to present a non-profit organization with which I had developed a personal connection, so that I and others could get to know it better.
I would like to present the Bread of Life Foundation -- particularly its English courses, teachers, and teaching methods. I would like to demonstrate the basis for the foundation’s success and how it is different from other English courses. At the same time I would like to show how little we speak foreign languages in Hungary, and how little effort it would take for us to further improve our knowledge of any language that we may already know. In 2002 I found an English course that I liked very much, because it accepted me with open heart and open arms, regardless of my age and my knowledge of English. This isn’t a traditional, plodding course wherein knowledge is simply learned by rote. No! This course helps build a useful knowledge of the language. The course includes music, song, sayings, situations, conversation with friends, grammar practice, easy to gradually more difficult reading selections, and many other things that help make learning English easier and more enjoyable. I started out learning English, but something else happened… I became a member of a community that studied together, went on excursions together, celebrated together, and shared thoughts and concerns with one another. I came to know many people upon whom I can always count, with whom I can meet with at any time, whether in joy or in sorrow. This community together cheered me on in my life’s first big step – completing high school. They crossed their fingers for me when I took my professional exams and my language exams. They rejoiced with me when I enrolled in college, and now they wait together with me for this summer, when I will finish college. I know that they will rejoice with me when I receive my first diploma. It is a special joy and honor for me that, on the occasion of the Bread of Life Foundation’s 10th anniversary, I am able to present in my thesis the foundation’s activities and programs that help improve our social welfare. |
